Before I Die I Will Dance

Before I die I will Dance
There will be no tears
Of sadness
And I will ask
That all my friends
Who come to say goodbye
Sing songs as they dance
Throughout the day
In memory of my life

Before I die
I will dance
To remember my younger days
When I danced up a storm
My feet Flying aimlessly about
While I danced
With all the pretty ladies
Until one fateful day
I danced with the one
Who stole my heart
Who became my wife
Who danced by my side
Hand in hand

I danced with the one
Whose kisses were sweet
Whose arms kept me warm
During cold, cold nights
Whose dance matched my own
Step for step, heel for toe
Until the day that my tears
Stopped the dance
When She could no longer
Dance at all

Before I die
I will dance

I will dance
To remember
All of the other times
Before I grew old
And felt God’s spirit
Lift me up
Lift me high
Filling my heart
Making me smile
Making me dance!

Before I die
I will dance
With all that I have
With all that is left
So that others might see
There is something in me

Before I die
I will dance… I will dance
I will dance
Dance
Dance

Moonless Nights

I love taking long strolls
On cool autumn nights
Up and down the old paths
In the Catskill woods
Stopping occasionally
Here and there
Each time
I run into a tree

Conflicted!

She would parade about the house
With a grin
That went from ear to ear
Flaunting herself
Without so much as
A stitch of clothes on
From the waist down
Taking poses
That would make Penthouse Magazine
Burst into flame
Forcing me
Let me repeat that…
“FORCING ME” to watch
And God knows
How difficult and terrible it was
For me to be put
In such a challenging situation
I hated every single minute
That I didn’t have enough time
To look

That Walk

I watched her
About a block or so away
Walking toward me
Her wheat blown hair
With silver strands
Tossed about
By the brisk northern wind
And that walk
A walk that only she knew
With a quick gait
Bouncing from side to side

I noticed her looking away
But knew her well enough
To know
She knew
That I was up ahead
And that she would suddenly turn
And with an act
Of total surprise say
Hello! I didn’t see you there

We hugged
With a hug of old lovers
You know the kind
Sort of nice but restrained
And spoke of the lost times
Trying to fill the other in
As quickly as possible
On those unknown missing years
Knowing that soon
Each of us
Would be on our way again

So as the cold Canadian wind
Whipped all about
We told abbreviated stories
Of the passing years
Ending with a smile
Ending with a hug
Ending with a kiss
As I watched her
Turn and go on her way
With that walk
That walk that only she knew
You know the one
With a quick gait
As she bounced from side to side

Leaving Woodstock by Walking Backwards

I have spent too many years
Walking backwards
Trying to retrace my steps
But every place I have gone
Has changed
It seems that nothing
Ever remains the same
And no one
Except for me
Remembers you

And though
They call me a fool
And tell me
That it's impossible
I still believe
That you are out there
Somewhere
Doing the very same thing
Walking backwards
Looking for me
